Seamen's Bethel Chapel Conversion, Workington
A former seamen's chapel in a Workington Conservation Area given a new life as a single family home, with a new first floor set inside the existing roof.
Falcon Street, Workington, Cumbria · 2026 · Planning approved · Ref FUL/2026/0033
THE BRIEF
Find a viable residential use for a former chapel and non-residential institution in a Conservation Area, keeping the character of the building and its street presence.
OUR APPROACH
The building is reorganised internally rather than extended. A new structural first floor sits within the existing roof envelope, lit by carefully placed rooflights, with alterations to existing openings kept to a minimum. Flood risk, surface-water drainage, marketing and viability, and an access concern raised during consultation were each answered with a supporting statement.
OUTCOME
Full planning permission granted for change of use to a single dwellinghouse (Use Class C3), FUL/2026/0033.
PLANEST ROLE
Planning strategy, design and the supporting technical submissions, working with Mold Design Lab.
