A 5-Metre Rear Extension in Fenham, Approved: Designing Around the Neighbours
Updated: Sep 27
A deep rear extension on a terraced street is exactly the kind of project that worries neighbours – and planning officers. On Royal Crescent in Fenham, Newcastle upon Tyne, we designed a single-storey rear extension of roughly 5 metres plus a new front porch. The application (2024/1573/01/HOU) was recommended for conditional approval by Newcastle City Council in January 2025.

The brief
The family wanted kitchen, dining and everyday living in one space, with a proper connection to the rear garden – something the original terrace layout never offered.
How we handled the neighbours' light and outlook
The extension reaches about 5 metres in depth, but it doesn't hit the boundaries at full depth. Instead we:
Chamfered the extension back near both shared boundaries, to around 3.4–3.5 metres
Used a hipped roof and relatively low eaves to reduce bulk next door
Matched the external materials to the existing house
The planning officer concluded the proposal would not cause unacceptable harm to neighbouring outlook, light, streetscape character or parking.
Inside: a kitchen-dining room that faces the garden
The interior design brings in warm timber finishes, integrated seating and garden-facing glazing. We used visualisations to test spatial flow and furniture placement against the existing ground floor before anything was built – so the client knew exactly what they were getting.
Our role
Architectural design, planning coordination, interior design and visualisation – one team from first sketch to approval.
